2. Was man braucht

WasHinweise

Was der Plotter selbst macht

Weitermalen, auch im Hintergrund

Landschaft

Fehler beim Verbinden („TX Buffer overrun“, „OK“ statt Version)Trennen, USB kurz abziehen, erneut verbinden.

Tasten lösen doppelt ausDie Augensteuerung klickt selbst → „Eigene Verweil-Auswahl“ ausschalten.

Painting with your eyes – on real paper

EyePlotter connects eye gaze control with a drawing robot (plotter) such as the AxiDraw. Wherever you look, the robot paints – with pen, ink or watercolour.

1. What is it?

Many people who communicate with their eyes paint on screen. EyePlotter brings the picture onto real paper: a plotter guides a pen or brush exactly where the person is looking. The result is pictures you can touch, give away and exhibit.

2. What you need

WhatNotes
Computer with Chrome or EdgeWindows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. Safari and Firefox cannot control the plotter (no Web Serial).
Eye gaze systemE.g. Tobii, Windows Eye Control or any system that moves the mouse pointer. If the system clicks by itself, turn off “Built-in dwell selection” in the settings.
PlotterAxiDraw (all models: V3, SE/A4, SE/A3, XLX, MiniKit), other plotters with an EiBotBoard, or a G-code plotter running GRBL, FluidNC or Marlin. With power supply and USB cable. See “Which plotters work?”.
For watercolourRound brush size 6–10, paint box or watercolour pans, a flat water glass, watercolour paper from 300 gsm, masking tape.
OptionalWebcam above the plotter (live view, time-lapse, photo colouring pictures), microphone (sound line), touch screen or pen tablet (painting together), switch (scanning).

Which plotters work?

Choose under ⚙ Settings → “Paper & model” → “Plotter model”:

For all plotters: move the pen carriage to the start corner before connecting. If the picture comes out mirrored, reverse X or Y under “Pen servo”. Pressure levels, brush and paint box work with every plotter, as long as the pen can move to different heights.

3. First start (for the assistant)

Easiest: the guided set-up. ⚙ Settings → “Step-by-step set-up” → “Set up with a pen” or “Set up with brush & paint box”. It guides you through plotter, paper, connecting and heights – with a brush also through the layout with paint box and water glass, showing the pans, the colours and a test run. Every step has a picture of the layout. What you set there also appears in the settings afterwards. The list below describes the same steps by hand.
  1. Open the app in Chrome or Edge. Tip: use “Install app” in the address bar – it then starts like a program of its own and also works offline. Full screen: the app switches to full screen by itself on the first click (can be turned off under ⚙ Settings → Eye gaze). “Full screen” at the top right switches it on and off, the Esc key exits it.
  2. Push the carriage to the start corner: with the motors off, slide the carriage by hand all the way to the back left (that is “top left” on screen). This corner is the zero point.
  3. Place the sheet with its top left corner at the start corner and tape it down.
  4. ⚙ Settings → Connect plotter → choose “EiBotBoard” → Connect. The log shows the firmware version and “Connected”.
  5. Set model and paper (e.g. “AxiDraw SE/A3” and “A4 landscape”).
  6. Check the pen: “Pen down” / “Pen up”. If too high or too low, change the percentages under “Pen servo” (smaller number = lower).
  7. Test run without a pen: tool Line, set two points. If the movement is mirrored, tick “Reverse X/Y direction”.
  8. Adjust eye gaze: dwell times, tile size and fixation radius to suit the person.
Important: the plotter only knows its position because it starts in the start corner. If the carriage was moved by hand: push it back into the corner and choose “Current position = start”.

4. Using it with your eyes

6. The menus at a glance

7. Brush, paint box & watercolour

Set-up

  1. In ⚙ Settings → Paper & model choose “Apply suggested layout for painting”. With the A3 model: A4 sheet at the start corner, paint box upright to the right, water glass below.
  2. Fix the paint box and water glass with putty or masking tape.
  3. Under Brush & paint box move the brush with the arrows over the centre of the first pan (top left) → “This is the first pan”. Then over the last pan → “This is the last pan”. Same for water, cloth and mixing well. With “Rinse water is here” you can show up to four more water spots: when the colour changes, the brush rinses there and only briefly dips into the clean water at the end – so yellow after black does not turn grey. If the box is slightly curved, show each pan below: choose pan → “Go there” → correct with the arrows → “This pan is here”. Instead of the on-screen arrows you can also use the arrow keys on the keyboard (with Shift in 0.5 mm steps, space bar lowers briefly). By hand, the brush can go up to 6 cm beyond the travel; the travel itself can be increased under “Paper & model”.
  4. Enter the colours of the pans (colour field and name).
  5. Set the heights: the paint box is higher than the paper. Use “Test height here” for Paper, Paint box, Water and Up. Smaller number = brush lower. “Up” must clear the rim of the box.
  6. “Visit all pans as a test” to check.
If the plotter’s lift (about 1.5–2 cm) is not enough, put the paper on a base (wooden board, thick card) so that paper and paint box are at nearly the same height.

What the plotter does by itself

Keeps painting, even in the background

Landscape

Tool → Landscape: sky, evening sky, sun, cloud, mountain, sea and meadow. Each element brings its own colour and technique (gradient, wet on wet, soft edge, waves, grass). For sky, sea and meadow you look at the horizon; for sun, cloud and mountain at the spot. Nicest order: the sun first, then the sky (it leaves the sun out, otherwise it turns greenish), then clouds and mountains, finally sea or meadow. The colour is the closest pan in the box. Mountains, forest and rainbow stand on the horizon painted last, the sun sets behind it. Also: tree, forest, rainbow, night sky with moon, flowers, rain and three whole pictures (sunset at the sea, mountains by the lake, summer meadow) painted layer by layer with drying breaks.

Tips: tape watercolour paper down on all sides (it buckles). Liquid ink or diluted watercolour is easier than hard paint cakes. The plotter slows down in curves – this gives calmer, richer lines.

8. Camera view (live)

  1. Mount a webcam above the plotter so that the whole sheet is visible (ideally straight from above).
  2. ⚙ Settings → Camera → “Start camera” → “Calibrate camera”.
  3. Calibrate with the pen (recommended): the plotter moves to four points one after another. Wait until the pen has stopped each time and click exactly on the pen tip in the camera image. This is the most accurate, because it calibrates against the machine – the camera image then fits even if the sheet is slightly askew.
  4. Or click the sheet corners (quick): the four corners in the order shown; the first is always the corner at the start corner of the plotter, wherever it is in the camera image.
  5. A grid then appears over the camera image – it must lie exactly on the real sheet. Then “Apply”. As a check the pen moves to the centre of the sheet: in the view “Both” the red dot must sit on the pen tip.
  6. Under “Sheet & album → View”: Digital, Camera (only the real sheet) or Both.

The app transforms the slanted camera image so that it fits the sheet view exactly. With a camera, “To album” saves a photo of the real picture, and the time-lapse films how it is made.

Camera image does not fit exactly? See section 12 – “Calibrate with the pen” usually helps.

9. Switch & scanning

For people who do not use eye gaze: ⚙ Settings → Switch. The app steps through the buttons; the switch (space, enter or mouse click) selects. On the sheet a vertical line moves first, then a horizontal one – where they cross is the point. Freehand is not possible with a switch.

10. Painting together

Under “Sheet & album → Paint together” choose a colour. A second person paints with a finger on a touch screen or with a pen tablet. Gaze (mouse) and touch do not interfere with each other.

11. Album, time-lapse, files

12. Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
“This browser does not support Web Serial”Use Chrome or Edge on a computer. The page must be opened via https:// or as a local file.
No “EiBotBoard” in the selection windowCheck the USB cable, close plotter software (e.g. Inkscape) (only one program may use the port).
Error while connecting (“TX Buffer overrun”, “OK” instead of version)Disconnect, unplug USB briefly, connect again. The app retries commands automatically.
Motors do not moveIs the power supply plugged in? USB alone does not move anything.
Picture comes out mirroredPen servo → reverse X or Y direction.
Picture is shiftedThe carriage was not in the start corner when connecting. Push it back → “Current position = start”. Check the sheet offset.
Brush does not reach the paint / gets stuck on the rimTest and adjust the heights under “Brush & paint box”; put the paper on a base if needed.
Camera image does not match the view (shifted, rotated, distorted)The first corner clicked must be the start corner of the plotter. Most accurate is “Calibrate with the pen”: the plotter moves to four points, and you click the pen tip in the camera image each time. Do not move the camera or change its resolution afterwards – otherwise the app warns and turns off the camera view. Webcams distort slightly at the edges (fisheye), so deviations of 1–3 mm at the edges are normal.
Buttons trigger twiceThe eye gaze system clicks by itself → turn off “Built-in dwell selection”.
Buttons too small / too large⚙ Settings → Eye gaze → Tile size.
