Testfahrt ohne Stift: Werkzeug Linie, zwei Punkte setzen.

Werkzeug
So geht's
Linie
Kreis · Rechteck
Mitte, dann Rand · erste Ecke, dann gegenüberliegende Ecke. Auf Wunsch gefüllt.
Stempel
24 Motive (Sonne, Herz, Haus, Katze, Boot, Schneeflocke, Musiknote …) in drei Größen.
Schreiben
Stelle anschauen, auf der großen Tastatur tippen. Ein Talker mit Tastatur-Ausgabe kann direkt mitschreiben.
Kunst
Pollock (Spritzer), Kandinsky (Kreise, Gitter), Miró (Sterne, Augen), Mondrian, Klee, Matisse, Große Welle (Hokusai), Van Gogh, Delaunay und Hundertwasser – jedes Mal anders.
Generativ
Fluss, Ranke, Wellenringe, Farbwolke, Blüte, Gras, Regen, Tupfenwolke, Sternbild, Spirale, Wellenband, Strahlen, Blätterzweig, Wirbel, Spinnennetz, Berge, Kristall, Schuppen, Blickbild (10 Sekunden frei schauen – daraus wird ein Bild) und Klang-Linie (Stimme oder Musik formt die Linie). Für Aquarell gemacht.
Ausmalen
Vorlage wählen (Haus, Blume, Fisch, Mandala …), dann in Flächen schauen. Eigene Vorlagen: SVG-Datei oder ein Foto (Kamera oder Datei) – dunkles Motiv auf hellem Grund.
6. Die Menüs im Überblick
Strich: Dünn / Mittel / Dick (der Pinsel drückt tiefer), Ecken oder Rund, „Wie von Hand“ (Formen leicht lebendig), „Breite durch Hinschauen“.
Flächen: Nicht füllen, Füllen, Verlauf (oben oder unten kräftig). Mit Pinsel zusätzlich: Nass in nass, Weiche Ränder, Lasur.
Spiegeln: Links/Rechts, 4 Viertel, Mandala 6 oder 8.
Stift/Pinsel: Malmittel wählen; „Sofort zeichnen“ oder „Erst sammeln“ (dann mit „Zurück“ korrigieren und erst mit „Plotten“ zeichnen); beim Pinsel: Trocknen lassen, Auswaschen, Farbe holen, Nachtunken oft/normal/selten.
7. Pinsel, Tuschkasten & Aquarell
Aufbau
Was der Plotter selbst macht
Zeitraffer: starten, malen lassen, „Zeitraffer speichern“ → Video (.webm).
Das Album liegt nur in diesem Browser. Sichern: ⚙ Einstellungen → Album → „Album als Datei sichern“.
12. Wenn etwas nicht klappt
Problem
Fehler beim Verbinden („TX Buffer overrun“, „OK“ statt Version)
Trennen, USB kurz abziehen, erneut verbinden. Die App wiederholt Befehle automatisch.
Motoren bewegen sich nicht
Netzteil eingesteckt? Über USB allein bewegt sich nichts.
Bild kommt gespiegelt heraus
Stift-Servo → X- oder Y-Richtung umkehren.
Bild sitzt verschoben
Painting with your eyes – on real paper
EyePlotter connects eye gaze control with a drawing robot (plotter) such as the AxiDraw. Wherever you look, the robot paints – with pen, ink or watercolour.
1. What is it?
Many people who communicate with their eyes paint on screen. EyePlotter brings the picture onto real paper: a plotter guides a pen or brush exactly where the person is looking. The result is pictures you can touch, give away and exhibit.
Fully operable with the eyes (dwell), with mouse, touch or a single switch.
From simple tools (line, circle, stamp) to generative styles where the picture “grows” while you look.
Watercolour and ink: the plotter fetches paint from the paint box by itself, rinses the brush and can mix colours.
Without a plotter everything runs as a simulation – for trying out and practising.
2. What you need
What
Notes
Computer with Chrome or Edge
Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. Safari and Firefox cannot control the plotter (no Web Serial).
Eye gaze system
E.g. Tobii, Windows Eye Control or any system that moves the mouse pointer. If the system clicks by itself, turn off “Built-in dwell selection” in the settings.
Plotter
AxiDraw (all models: V3, SE/A4, SE/A3, XLX, MiniKit), other plotters with an EiBotBoard, or a G-code plotter running GRBL, FluidNC or Marlin. With power supply and USB cable. See “Which plotters work?”.
For watercolour
Round brush size 6–10, paint box or watercolour pans, a flat water glass, watercolour paper from 300 gsm, masking tape.
AxiDraw (V3/A3, SE/A3, V3, SE/A4, XLX, MiniKit): the travel is preset, everything else works with the default values.
Other EiBotBoard plotter: for plotters with the same controller board as the AxiDraw. Enter the travel width and depth yourself. If the pen does not lift properly, adjust “Servo min” and “Servo max” under “Pen servo”.
G-code plotter (GRBL, FluidNC, Marlin): for many DIY and kit plotters. Enter the travel yourself. In the “G-code plotter” box, set how the pen is lifted:
“Servo via M3 S (GRBL)”: GRBL with a servo on the spindle output.
“Servo via M280 (Marlin)”: Marlin with servo 0.
“Z axis (G0 Z)”: the pen is mounted on a Z axis.
“Value at 0 %” and “Value at 100 %” set the range (S value, angle or mm). Then use “Pen up” and “Pen down” to set the percentages for up and down. The mechanics (for example CoreXY) must be configured in the firmware. Many of these controllers restart when you connect, so connecting takes about three seconds.
For all plotters: move the pen carriage to the start corner before connecting. If the picture comes out mirrored, reverse X or Y under “Pen servo”. Pressure levels, brush and paint box work with every plotter, as long as the pen can move to different heights.
3. First start (for the assistant)
Easiest: the guided set-up. ⚙ Settings → “Step-by-step set-up” → “Set up with a pen” or “Set up with brush & paint box”. It guides you through plotter, paper, connecting and heights – with a brush also through the layout with paint box and water glass, showing the pans, the colours and a test run. Every step has a picture of the layout. What you set there also appears in the settings afterwards. The list below describes the same steps by hand.
Open the app in Chrome or Edge. Tip: use “Install app” in the address bar – it then starts like a program of its own and also works offline. Full screen: the app switches to full screen by itself on the first click (can be turned off under ⚙ Settings → Eye gaze). “Full screen” at the top right switches it on and off, the Esc key exits it.
Push the carriage to the start corner: with the motors off, slide the carriage by hand all the way to the back left (that is “top left” on screen). This corner is the zero point.
Place the sheet with its top left corner at the start corner and tape it down.
⚙ Settings → Connect plotter → choose “EiBotBoard” → Connect. The log shows the firmware version and “Connected”.
Set model and paper (e.g. “AxiDraw SE/A3” and “A4 landscape”).
Check the pen: “Pen down” / “Pen up”. If too high or too low, change the percentages under “Pen servo” (smaller number = lower).
Test run without a pen: tool Line, set two points. If the movement is mirrored, tick “Reverse X/Y direction”.
Adjust eye gaze: dwell times, tile size and fixation radius to suit the person.
Important: the plotter only knows its position because it starts in the start corner. If the carriage was moved by hand: push it back into the corner and choose “Current position = start”.
4. Using it with your eyes
Dwell: look at a button – a bar and a ring fill up – then it triggers. Afterwards the gaze has to leave the button briefly before it can trigger again.
On the sheet: look at a spot until the ring is full. Small eye movements inside the ring are fine.
Look longer = more: with “Width by looking” and with the generative styles the ring fills up to three times (level 1–3). It triggers when the gaze moves on.
All buttons are the same size and always in the same place. In menus, Back is always bottom left and Close always bottom right.
The line at the top always says what to do next. Help (bottom right) explains the current tool.
Left bar
Right bar
Tool – what is painted
Lift pen – end the line, start a new one
Colour – pen or paint box colour, mixing
Back – undo the last step (only what is not yet on paper)
Every point you look at is connected to the previous one. With “Stroke → Round” you get soft curves.
Freehand
Look at the starting point, then the pen follows your gaze. Jitter is filtered out. Holding still or looking off the sheet lifts the pen. A big gaze jump lifts the pen briefly.
Wave · Dabs
Like line, but wavy · every look places a dab.
Circle · Rectangle
Centre, then edge · first corner, then the opposite corner. Optionally filled.
Stamp
24 motifs (sun, heart, house, cat, boat, snowflake, musical note …) in three sizes.
Write
Look at the spot, type on the big keyboard. An AAC device with keyboard output can type directly.
Art
Pollock (splashes), Kandinsky (circles, grids), Miró (stars, eyes), Mondrian, Klee, Matisse, Great wave (Hokusai), Van Gogh, Delaunay and Hundertwasser – different every time.
Generative
Flow, tendril, ripples, colour cloud, blossom, grass, rain, dab cloud, constellation, spiral, wave band, rays, leafy twig, swirl, spider web, mountains, crystal, scales, gaze picture (look around freely for 10 seconds – it becomes a picture) and sound line (voice or music shapes the line). Made for watercolour.
Colour in
Choose a template (house, flower, fish, mandala …), then look into areas. Own templates: SVG file or a photo (camera or file) – dark motif on a light background.
6. The menus at a glance
Stroke: thin / medium / thick (the brush presses deeper), corners or round, hand-drawn look, width by looking.
Areas: no fill, fill, gradient (strong at top or bottom). With a brush also: wet on wet, soft edges, glazing.
Mirror: left/right, 4 quarters, mandala 6 or 8.
Pen/brush: choose the medium; “Draw at once” or “Collect first” (correct with “Back”, then draw with “Plot”); with a brush: let it dry, rinse, fetch paint, reload often/normal/rarely.
7. Brush, paint box & watercolour
Set-up
In ⚙ Settings → Paper & model choose “Apply suggested layout for painting”. With the A3 model: A4 sheet at the start corner, paint box upright to the right, water glass below.
Fix the paint box and water glass with putty or masking tape.
Under Brush & paint box move the brush with the arrows over the centre of the first pan (top left) → “This is the first pan”. Then over the last pan → “This is the last pan”. Same for water, cloth and mixing well. With “Rinse water is here” you can show up to four more water spots: when the colour changes, the brush rinses there and only briefly dips into the clean water at the end – so yellow after black does not turn grey. If the box is slightly curved, show each pan below: choose pan → “Go there” → correct with the arrows → “This pan is here”. Instead of the on-screen arrows you can also use the arrow keys on the keyboard (with Shift in 0.5 mm steps, space bar lowers briefly). By hand, the brush can go up to 6 cm beyond the travel; the travel itself can be increased under “Paper & model”.
Enter the colours of the pans (colour field and name).
Set the heights: the paint box is higher than the paper. Use “Test height here” for Paper, Paint box, Water and Up. Smaller number = brush lower. “Up” must clear the rim of the box.
“Visit all pans as a test” to check.
If the plotter’s lift (about 1.5–2 cm) is not enough, put the paper on a base (wooden board, thick card) so that paper and paint box are at nearly the same height.
What the plotter does by itself
Dips into water before fetching paint (to dissolve solid paint), then stirs in the pan.
Fetches more paint after an adjustable distance and continues at the same spot.
Rinses in water when the colour changes, optionally dabs on a cloth.
Mixing: Colour → Mix → choose two colours and the ratio. The plotter brings both into the mixing well and paints from there.
Gradient: each step only picks up water – the colour gets lighter.
Wet on wet: water first, then paint into the wet area. Soft edges: the edge is traced afterwards with clean water. Glazing: let dry before every new area (large countdown, “Continue now” skips). These three are under Areas → More.
From dark to light (e.g. black → yellow) the brush rinses longer by itself.
Speed: when refilling, the brush no longer goes into the water every time (only when the colour changes), travels faster when up (180 mm/s), refills after 120 mm and lifts only a little for short jumps on the sheet. The header shows the approximate time left. Everything can be changed in the settings.
Change the water: after an adjustable number of rinses (default 12) the plotter stops and asks for fresh water.
Wet the paint box (Brush menu): every pan gets water before painting, then the paints soak for a minute.
Test dab (optional): after fetching paint the brush first dabs on a test strip next to the sheet.
Thin and thick brush (Brush menu): each brush remembers its width and heights. When switching, the plotter rinses and asks for the other brush.
Control the brush yourself (Brush menu): the “Colour” tile then shows what the brush should do now – fetch paint, rinse, take water, blot. The plotter no longer fetches anything by itself.
Keeps painting, even in the background
When you switch to Grid or another window, the plotter keeps painting as long as it has something to do.
If Grid starts EyePlotter again, the open window is brought to the front, not reloaded. If a second window opens anyway, it says so and does not connect.
The picture is saved continuously. After reloading, a crash or a power cut it is back: push the carriage to the start corner, connect, “Plot” paints what is missing.
After a 3-minute pause the plotter rinses the brush by itself so the paint does not dry in. Done for today (Pen/Brush menu) rinses, parks in the start corner and switches the motors off.
Keys for Grid: 1–9 and 0 = pan 1–10, comma and full stop = pan 11 and 12, A = rinse, W = water, T = blot, P = plot, Z = undo, S or Esc = stop, Enter = continue.
Time log (settings): shows how long painting, travelling, refilling and rinsing took.
Landscape
Tool → Landscape: sky, evening sky, sun, cloud, mountain, sea and meadow. Each element brings its own colour and technique (gradient, wet on wet, soft edge, waves, grass). For sky, sea and meadow you look at the horizon; for sun, cloud and mountain at the spot. Nicest order: the sun first, then the sky (it leaves the sun out, otherwise it turns greenish), then clouds and mountains, finally sea or meadow. The colour is the closest pan in the box. Mountains, forest and rainbow stand on the horizon painted last, the sun sets behind it. Also: tree, forest, rainbow, night sky with moon, flowers, rain and three whole pictures (sunset at the sea, mountains by the lake, summer meadow) painted layer by layer with drying breaks.
Tips: tape watercolour paper down on all sides (it buckles). Liquid ink or diluted watercolour is easier than hard paint cakes. The plotter slows down in curves – this gives calmer, richer lines.
8. Camera view (live)
Mount a webcam above the plotter so that the whole sheet is visible (ideally straight from above).
⚙ Settings → Camera → “Start camera” → “Calibrate camera”.
Calibrate with the pen (recommended): the plotter moves to four points one after another. Wait until the pen has stopped each time and click exactly on the pen tip in the camera image. This is the most accurate, because it calibrates against the machine – the camera image then fits even if the sheet is slightly askew.
Or click the sheet corners (quick): the four corners in the order shown; the first is always the corner at the start corner of the plotter, wherever it is in the camera image.
A grid then appears over the camera image – it must lie exactly on the real sheet. Then “Apply”. As a check the pen moves to the centre of the sheet: in the view “Both” the red dot must sit on the pen tip.
Under “Sheet & album → View”: Digital, Camera (only the real sheet) or Both.
The app transforms the slanted camera image so that it fits the sheet view exactly. With a camera, “To album” saves a photo of the real picture, and the time-lapse films how it is made.
Camera image does not fit exactly? See section 12 – “Calibrate with the pen” usually helps.
9. Switch & scanning
For people who do not use eye gaze: ⚙ Settings → Switch. The app steps through the buttons; the switch (space, enter or mouse click) selects. On the sheet a vertical line moves first, then a horizontal one – where they cross is the point. Freehand is not possible with a switch.
10. Painting together
Under “Sheet & album → Paint together” choose a colour. A second person paints with a finger on a touch screen or with a pen tablet. Gaze (mouse) and touch do not interfere with each other.
11. Album, time-lapse, files
To album: saves the picture in the browser (with a camera as a photo). Select an album picture → load → “Plot” paints it again.
Plot again: asks for a new sheet and paints the picture once more – e.g. for postcards.
As file: SVG for further editing or printing.
Time-lapse: start it, let the plotter paint, “Save time-lapse” → video (.webm).
The album is stored in this browser only. Back it up: ⚙ Settings → Album → “Save album as file”.
12. Troubleshooting
Problem
Solution
“This browser does not support Web Serial”
Use Chrome or Edge on a computer. The page must be opened via https:// or as a local file.
No “EiBotBoard” in the selection window
Check the USB cable, close plotter software (e.g. Inkscape) (only one program may use the port).
Error while connecting (“TX Buffer overrun”, “OK” instead of version)
Disconnect, unplug USB briefly, connect again. The app retries commands automatically.
Motors do not move
Is the power supply plugged in? USB alone does not move anything.
Picture comes out mirrored
Pen servo → reverse X or Y direction.
Picture is shifted
The carriage was not in the start corner when connecting. Push it back → “Current position = start”. Check the sheet offset.
Brush does not reach the paint / gets stuck on the rim
Test and adjust the heights under “Brush & paint box”; put the paper on a base if needed.
Camera image does not match the view (shifted, rotated, distorted)
The first corner clicked must be the start corner of the plotter. Most accurate is “Calibrate with the pen”: the plotter moves to four points, and you click the pen tip in the camera image each time. Do not move the camera or change its resolution afterwards – otherwise the app warns and turns off the camera view. Webcams distort slightly at the edges (fisheye), so deviations of 1–3 mm at the edges are normal.
Buttons trigger twice
The eye gaze system clicks by itself → turn off “Built-in dwell selection”.
Buttons too small / too large
⚙ Settings → Eye gaze → Tile size.
13. Safety & privacy
Do not reach into the arm while the plotter is moving. Stop halts it within half a second at most.
Everything stays on your own computer: camera, microphone, pictures and settings are not sent to the internet. There is no login and no tracking.
Exception, only on request: pressing “Save online” under ⚙ → “On several devices” stores the settings (plotter, paper, paint box, pans, colours, heights, eye gaze) under a random device code on the AssistUK server. Pictures and camera data are never uploaded. Anyone who knows the code can load and change these settings – so do not share the code publicly. “Stop syncing” switches the upload off.
